K, W and Y only joined the alphabet in 2009
Before that, Portuguese officially had 23 letters. The spelling agreement of 1990 — which Brazil and Portugal only both put into practice around 2009 — brought the other three in. So a grandparent’s alphabet book may well say 23, and they are right about the book they learned from. Those three sit at the end of this pack, because they are still almost never used in a Portuguese word. That is the sort of thing this pack tells you.
Written for the parent who does not speak Portuguese
Most alphabet packs assume you already know how the letters sound. This one does not. Every letter has its Portuguese name written out, and a sound note in ordinary English. Brazil or Portugal? Both. It is one written language, and a child who learns these letters can read a book printed in either country. What differs is the music of it, a handful of everyday words and one grammar habit — so the guide prints a side-by-side table (comboio / trem, autocarro / ônibus, telemóvel / celular) for you to cross out the column that is not yours. There is a two-page table you can keep beside you while you work, and the spelling rules written out in full.
