Career Change Resume Template — Transferable Skills CV
Changing field is not a formatting problem. But a standard resume makes it one.
A normal layout opens with your last job title. If that title belongs to the field you are leaving, it is the first thing a reader meets — and often the last. This layout puts your transferable skills and your retraining above the work history, so the case is made before the old titles appear. Nothing is hidden and nothing is invented: the same history is simply read in an order that makes sense.
The section order
- Contact details — in the body, never in the page header.
- A summary that names the change — old field, new field, what carries across.
- Transferable skills — grouped, in the language of the field you are entering.
- Retraining and certifications — proof the move is already underway.
- Work experience — your real history, described in results rather than duties.
- Education — last, unless you have just finished something directly relevant.
The summary, the transferable skills block and the retraining section are what a standard template does not give you, and they are the whole reason this layout exists.
Naming the change on purpose
An unexplained jump reads as a risk. A stated one reads as a decision. The summary prompt makes you say it in the first two lines — which field you are leaving, which you are entering, and the one thing that carries across — so nobody has to guess or assume the worst.
