German Alphabet Pack for Kids — Bilingual Flashcards and Tracing Worksheets

All 30 characters — the 26 letters plus ä, ö, ü and ß — each with its German name and a plain-English hint for the sound.

For families raising a child in two languages, and for the parent or grandparent sitting next to them. Instant download, printed at home, black and white on purpose.

The rule no other language has

Every German noun starts with a capital letter. Not just names — every single noun: der Hund, das Haus, die Milch. Every word card in this pack is written the German way, with its der, die or das attached. Learn the little word with the big one from the first day: a child who learns “der Hund” as one thing never has to go back and add it, while an adult learner almost always does. That is the whole advantage of starting at four.

Written for the parent who does not speak German

Most alphabet packs assume you already know how the letters sound. This one does not. Every letter has its German name written out, and a sound note in ordinary English. Four swaps do most of the work: v says f, w says v, z says ts, and s says z before a vowel. The trap every beginner falls into is ei and ie — ei says “eye”, ie says “ee”, so Eis is “ice” and Bier is “beer”; the rule that always works is to say the second letter’s name. The guide also covers ch, sch, the umlauts and ß, including the fact that Switzerland does not use ß at all. There is a two-page table you can keep beside you while you work, and the spelling rules written out in full.

What is in it

  • Parents’ guide — how to use the pack without turning it into a test, plus a full table of every letter: its name, what it sounds like in plain English, an example word and its translation.
  • The alphabet, one page per letter — big upper and lower case, the letter’s name to say out loud, four ruled rows (two to trace, two to write alone), then a picture, the example word with its first letter marked, and the word to trace underneath.
  • Word cards and tracing worksheets — to cut out, and to work through again once the letters are known.
  • 76 pages in total, supplied in both A4 and US Letter.

Black and white on purpose

So it costs almost nothing to print, prints properly on a home printer, and a child can colour it in. There is nothing to laminate and nothing to buy again.
