ATS-Friendly Cover Letter Pack — Standard, Career Change, Speculative

Starting with the uncomfortable part: a lot of employers do not read cover letters, and some application systems do not even show them to the hiring manager. If that is true where you are applying, nothing in this pack will change it.

Here is why it is still worth twenty minutes. The letter is the only place you get to explain something a resume cannot — why this company, why this jump, why the gap, why you are worth a conversation despite missing one requirement. When a hiring manager is choosing between two similar resumes, that explanation is often the whole difference.

What is in it

  • Standard application (.docx) — for an advertised job you are already qualified for. A four-paragraph structure with a prompt written into every paragraph, in grey, so you are never staring at a blank page.
  • Career change (.docx) — names the change on purpose in the first sentence, because an unexplained jump reads as a risk and a stated one reads as a decision. One transferable achievement in the new field’s language, and a paragraph for what you have already done to close the gap, with dates.
  • Speculative (.docx) — for writing to a company with no advertised vacancy. Upfront that there is no job advert, one role you would be hired for rather than everything, proof you did not send the same letter to forty companies, and a small ask that is easy to say yes to.
  • Follow-up emails (.txt) — four templates, all under 120 words: after applying, after an interview, chasing a decision when the date they gave you has passed, and withdrawing politely.
  • Start Here guide (.pdf) — which letter to use, what to cut, and how long is too long.

Who gets the most out of it

Anyone with something a resume cannot explain on its own: a career changer, someone writing to a company with no advertised vacancy, someone with a gap in the dates, or someone who meets four of five requirements and needs the fifth addressed rather than ignored. If you are applying for an advertised job you already fit perfectly, the standard letter takes ten minutes and the follow-up emails are probably the more useful half of the pack.

Why they are ATS-friendly

No tables, no text boxes, no columns and no graphics — the same four structural rules as the resume templates, for the same reason. Where a system does pass the letter through, it arrives as readable text rather than as a scrambled block.
