Personal data

Personal data is information about you.

For example your name, your phone number or your address.

Organisation

An organisation is a place that uses your personal data.

For example a company, a bank or a state office.

The law calls this organisation the data controller.

The Board

The Board is the Personal Data Protection Board in Turkey.

The Board works to protect personal data.

To apply

To apply means to ask an organisation something in writing.

To delete

To delete means to remove the data completely.

To object

To object means to say that you are against a decision.

Your rights

An organisation may use your personal data.

You can apply to this organisation.

You have these rights.

  • Does the organisation use your data?

    You can ask this.

  • If the organisation uses your data, you can ask for information about it.

  • Why does the organisation use your data?

    You can ask this.

    Does it use your data only for this reason?

    You can ask this too.

  • Did the organisation give your data to other people?

    Who did it give your data to?

    You have the right to know this.

    These people can be in Turkey or in another country.

  • Your data may be wrong or something may be missing.

    You can ask the organisation to correct your data.

  • Sometimes you can ask the organisation to delete your data.

    The law says when this is possible.

    For example, the reason for using your data may be over.

  • The organisation corrected or deleted your data.

    Maybe the organisation gave your data to other people before.

    Then you can ask the organisation to tell these people too.

  • Sometimes only a computer checks your data.

    The computer decides alone.

    This decision may be bad for you.

    Then you can object to this decision.

  • The organisation may have broken the law when it used your data.

    This may have caused you harm.

    Then you can ask the organisation to pay for the harm.

How to apply

  • Write down your request and send it to the organisation.

    The Board can also allow other ways.

  • The organisation must answer you as soon as possible.

    The organisation has 30 days at the most.

  • Usually the answer is free.

  • Sometimes the organisation has extra costs.

    Then the organisation can ask you for a fee.

    The Board decides how much the fee can be.

  • The organisation says yes or no to your request.

    If the organisation says no, it must tell you why.

  • The organisation sends you the answer in writing or electronically.

    For example by email.

  • If the organisation says yes, it must do what you asked for.

  • Sometimes your request comes from a mistake of the organisation.

    If you paid a fee, the organisation gives you the money back.
